CHIMP Act passes, for better or worse
Article Abstract:
On December 20, 2000, US Congress passed the Chimpanzee Health Improvement Maintenance and Protection Act, which will result in a system of chimpanzee sanctuaries, where chimpanzees used by the federal government for biomedical research will "retire." Some animal rights activists are against the act because it does not guarantee that the chimps will not be reused for medical research.

The elephants' graveyard: life in captivity
Article Abstract:
Abuse and deprivation drive captive elephants to rampage and hurt people. The physical and mental stress suffered by elephants in captivity shortens their lives and severely affects their health. Stricter laws should be mandated to ensure the protection of elephants that are held captive and forced to perform in circuses.
