C.P. Snow's 'two cultures' thesis was just 'declinist whinging.' (United Kingdom; scientific culture)
Article Abstract:
David Edgerton of Imperial College, London, England, speaking to the British Association for the Advancement of Science, denounced the widely quoted 1950s thesis of C.P. Snow on the two cultures of art and science. Snow based his thesis that British culture is anti-scientific on the fact that most politicians and civil servants come from humanities backgrounds. However, Britain had a 50-fold increase in scientists between 1902 and 1966, it has a great scientists in its history, and Britain has produced relatively more scientific and engineering graduates than Germany, France or Japan.

Congress urged to end budget uncertainty
Article Abstract:
Ninety US congressmen have corresponded with the members of a budget committee in the House of Representatives calling for an agreement on a budget covering the whole financial year for the National Science Foundation (NSF). A speech by NSF Director Neal Lane led several scientific societies to rally support for NSF. A coalition of biologists asked their legislative network to appeal to the congressional leadership for funds for NSF. The scientific societies believe that their efforts would mark the beginning of greater political influence for the NSF.
