Calcium-independent potentiation of insulin release by cyclic AMP in single beta-cells
Article Abstract:
Through activation of protein kinase A, cAMP increases CA2+-influx through voltage-dependent L-type Ca2+ channels, which elevates /Ca2+~i and accelerates exocytosis. Insulin release by a direct interaction with the secretory machinery is also promoted by cAMP, accounting for 80 percent of its effect. Microfluorimetry and the patch-clamp technique are used to measure changes simultaneously in Ca2+ currents, /Ca2+~i and exocylosis7-9 in a single beta-cell in response to cAMP.

Body mass dependence of H+ leak in mitochondria and its relevance to metabolic rate
Article Abstract:
The relationship of proton leak to body mass and the relevance of this relationship to the standard metabolic rate was investigated. Proton leak makes a significant contribution to resting oxygen consumption, and thus to metabolic rate. The results showed that in mammals, proton leak decreases with increasing body mass. This suggests that body mass differences may explain the differences in metabolic rates among mammals of varying sizes.
