Cancer risk prompts US to curb gene therapy
Article Abstract:
The US Food and Drug Administration suspended gene therapy trials for children with severe combined immunodeficiency disease (SCID) when it caused cancer in two children in a French study. It has since been learned that the retrovirus used as a vector in the trial was the cause of the cancer, and this may mean that any retroviral vector could cause similar problems.
