Carbon onions introduce new flavor to fullerene studies
Article Abstract:
Daniel Ugarte has found that when soot is subjected to high temperature through the irradiation of an electron microscope's electron beam, it takes on the form of very large shells of carbon, nested concentrically. Large two-dimensional sheets of carbon, consisting of one to 10 million atoms hexagonally arrayed, seem to be unstable because bonds left dangling at the edges make the sheet close into a shell. Ugarte's results cast doubt on the supposition that flat carbon is the most stable form of carbon.

Small-bandgap endohedral metallofullerenes in high yield and purity
Article Abstract:
The introduction of small volumes of nitrogen into an electric-arc reactor permits the efficient production of a new family of stable endohedral fullerenes encapsulating trimetallic nitride clusters, ErxSc3-xN@C80 (x = 0-3). It was possible to confirm the endohedral nature of Sc3N@C80 by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study of (Sc3N@C80).CoII(OEP).1.5CHCl3.0.5 C6H6. The spectrum of the Sc3N cluster indicates substantial pertubation of the carbon cage.

Endohedral fullerene production
Article Abstract:
The exposure of monolayers of C60 to an intense beam of alkali ions, such as lithium (Li), produces an endohedral alkali-metal fullerene film. The ion beam energy, about 6 eV for Li+ and 40 eV for K+, is such that the ions penetrate the carbon structure without damaging it. The film is many nanometers thick and a significant portion of the C60 molecules contain an ion. An infrared absorption spectrum reveals the properties of a series of Li@C60 films.
