Caribou calf production and seasonal range quality during a population decline
Article Abstract:
Research undertaken among the Southern Alaska Peninsula Caribou Herd into the significance of winter and summer ranges for the productivity of caribou indicates that winter range deficiency could have played a role in low calf production in this herd. Summer calf:cow ratios in this herd were lower than or similar to those identified for other declining Alaskan caribou herds. Caribou in this herd may actually favour graminoids in winter, as is the case with Rangifer on other lichen-poor ranges.

Habitat and diet selection by muskoxen and reindeer in western Alaska
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that although the Alaskan feeding areas of the musk ox and reindeer overlap, competition does not arise as the two species differ from each other in their selection of forage plants. While musk oxen typically select moss and sedge, reindeer usually choose lichens.

Nutritional value of moss for Arctic ruminants: a test with muskoxen
Article Abstract:
The study of ruminal digestion of moss in muskoxen shows little nutritional value in terms of nitrogen availability and therefore the possible reason for consumption of moss to be the scarcity of favored foods.
