Cattle requirements and diet adequacy
Article Abstract:
Submodels for estimating cattle requirements are presented as well as data for validating the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System (CNCPS) and National Research Council predictions of DMI, energy and protein retained, energy reserves in cows and metabolizable protein allowable production. These results were compared against independent data obtained from other models. Results of the evaluation show that CNCPS provides accurate predictions of animal performance.

Ruminal fermentation
Article Abstract:
The Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System was evaluated on its capacity to predict ruminal fermentation. It has a kinetic submodel which compares carbohydrate fermentation rate with that of protein to predict ruminally digestible organic matter, microbial protein synthesis, ammonia production and the flow of undigested feed to the lower gut. The evaluation showed that the submodel can accurately assess microbial growth and fermentation end products.

Carbohydrate and protein availability
Article Abstract:
The Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System determines structural and nonstructural carbohydrates from examination of NDF sequences. Total digestible nutrients and metabolizable protein can be predicted because ruminal and lower gut digestion is a function of fermentation and passage rates. The system is seen as an initial step in the accurate estimation of ruminally degraded carbohydrate and nitrogen fractions.
