Certainty of paternity and paternal care in birds: a reply to Dale
Article Abstract:
Pair-wise comparisons were used in analyzing the relationship between parental behavior and extra-pair paternity in birds because the close relationship of the birds' taxa that were used in the study. Discrepancies concerning computations may have been caused by lack of information and the small sizes of the sample populations used. The results suggest that the technique was unable to prove the correlation between paternity and paternal care in birds.

Why do male birds stop copulating while their partners are still fertile?
Article Abstract:
The decline in copulation frequency following the onset of egg laying is investigated for different bird species. Among the different hypotheses tested, the most reasonable is the sperm competition hypothesis. Where there is little sperm competition, as in monogamous birds, copulation ceases very early. But with intense sperm competition, as in polyandrous birds, copulations continue until the end of the female's fertile period.

Extra-pair copulation and extra-pair paternity in birds
Article Abstract:
Extensive research has failed to pin-point the nature of correlations between extra-pair copulation and extra-pair paternity in various bird species. Knowledge on factors such as ejaculate size and quality determinate paternity is limited and intra-species individual control of multiple mating is hard to assess, thereby limiting the scope of research on birds' mating habits.
