Changes in the hydrochemistry of the Black Sea inferred from water density profiles
Article Abstract:
Hydrochemical changes in the Black Sea resulting from pollution-caused ecological damage can be deduced from measuring water density. Research employing this method found that the upper boundary of the low-lying anoxic waters has not altered since 1969 while the intermediate suboxic zone has grown larger, thus diminishing the depth of the life-supporting oxygenated upper waters by about 20 meters. Furthermore, a rise in nitrate levels and a simultaneous drop in silicate and ammonia levels in the upper waters suggests that fundamental biochemical changes are occurring in the Black Sea.

CO2 increases oceanic primary production
Article Abstract:
Short-term experiments in the central Atlantic Ocean have revealed a small but important stimulation of primary production of biomass as a result of higher carbon dioxide concentrations that boost the carbon dioxide rise in surface waters that will take place over the next 100 to 200 years. This research indicates that the median primary production could rise by around 15% to 19% in response to the carbon dioxide rise, while other factors remain unchanged. It is likely that the overall response of oceanic primary production to the carbon dioxide rise would be quite small.
