Changing spatial structure of the thermohaline circulation in response to atmospheric CO(sub2) forcing in a climate model
Article Abstract:
Model studies have suggested that thermohaline circulation warming the climate of western Europe is sensitive to increased atmospheric greenhouse-gas concentrations. Simulations of the current thermohaline circulation are presented, using a coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation model without flux adjustments. A response to forcing with increasing atmospheric greenhouse-gas concentrations by a collapse of circulation and convection in the Labrador Sea is observed, whilst deep water formation remains stable.

Lichens, air pollution and lung cancer
Article Abstract:
There is still controversy over the link between lung cancer and pollution in the atmosphere. A study comparing a biodiversity map of lichens with a mortality map of a large area of northeastern Italy, found that there is a strong link between air pollution and lung cancer. The lichen study measured epiphytic lichen biodiversity, and air pollution using pollution data from nine municipalities. Although the risks linked to pollution exposure was small, the affected population was large.
