Characteristics of American marten den sites in Wyoming
Article Abstract:
The successful recruitment of American martins relies on the ready availability of denning habitat, which may also act to limit the Martes species. Despite this, little is known about the denning requirements of martens. A new study analyzes the den-site selection of female martens in the Medicine Bow National Forest in southern Wyoming. The research shows that the most important variable is the number of squirrel middens. Other den-site requirements include large logs, and medium and large snags, characteristics of late-successional forests.
