China juggles economic growth and basic research
Article Abstract:
China is implementing a new five-year program designed to balance a commitment to economic development with government financial support for basic research. The new initiative, designated the Climbing Program, will provide 1 million yuan ($200,000) annually for five years to 30 projects chosen because they met several criteria including helping China's economy. However, some scientists objected to the government's decision to reject several worthy research proposals. China continues to devote only 0.7% of its gross national product to basic research.
