Article Abstract:
Xu Liangying and Ding Zilin will receive the 1995 Heinz Pagels Award from the New York Academy of Sciences for their efforts to promote the human rights of scientists. Both awardees participated in the drafting and circulation of a petition to the Chinese government that calls for an amnesty for those who demonstrated for the democratic cause at Tiananmen Square in 1989. The 75-year-old Xu Liangying edited Einstein's works and translated them to his native language. People's University professor Ding Zilin had a 17-year-old son who died during the first night of the 1989 pro-democracy demonstration.

Science advice test in UK devolution vote
Article Abstract:
Researchers and science policy-makers have given broad backing to some of the interim decisions that have been made regarding science in Scotland and Wales following the election of representatives to the Scottish parliament and the Welsh assembly. There has been strong support for the decision to permit scientists in Scotland to continue to receive funding from the main UK research council budget. However, there is concern that the main political parties do not have clear policies on significant matters such as how the new parliaments will gain independent advice on scientific issues.
