Chlorophylll b and phycobilins in the common ancestor of cyanobacteria and chloroplasts
Article Abstract:
It has been possible to isolate chlorophyll a oxygenase or cDNAs from P. hollandica, P. didemni (Prochlorophyta), Dunaliella salina (Chlorophyceae), Marchantia polymorpha (Bryophyta) and Oryza sativa (Angiospermae) by polymerase chain reaction. The nucleotide sequences of the highly conserved region were subsequently determined. It was concluded that the origin of chloroplasts were probably oxygenic photosynthetic bacteria containing chlorophyll b and phycobilins. The ancestral photosynthetic eukaryotes should have possessed both chlorophyll b and phycobilins.

Making a light of a dark situation
Article Abstract:
Reinbothe and colleagues demonstrate that protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase (POR) presents plants with dilemmas as well as the solutions. They reconstituted light-harvesting POR-protochlorophyllide complex (LHPP) in vitro, and found different spectral properties from in vivo studies. The addition of galactolipids and sulpholipids from etioplasts results in LHPP with similar spectral characteristics to those of etioplast membrane preparations.

A protochlorophyllide light-harvesting complex involved in de-etiolation of higher plants
Article Abstract:
Etiolated angiosperm seedlings are unable to perform photosynthesis when breaking through the soil after germination. When chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b are absent protochlorophyllide a and protochlorophyllide b form complexes with NADPH and related NADPH:protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase (POR) proteins in the body of etioplasts. Such light-harvesting POR complexes, LHPP are required for the creation of photosynthetic apparatus.
