An associate professor at the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore describes India's need of biological research enterprise for a broad and visible multidisciplinary scientific base. The government hence announced US$250-million National Science and Engineering Research Fund to fund basic research in India with an aim to establish two integrated universities to teach and train a new breed of basic scientists.
