Competitive stumbling: Promised investment in the physical sciences is held up in a U.S. budget jam
Article Abstract:
The U.S. President George W. Bush had announced an American Competitiveness Initiative, which would have substantially increased the funding in physics, engineering and other disciplines at the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Since the Republican Congress did not finish the 2007 budget and the new Democrats want to focus on issues like lobbying reform and the war in Iraq, it is uncertain whether the proposal will be included in the 2008 budget.

Inside Enceladus
Article Abstract:
The chemical analysis of a plume emanating from near the south pole of Enceladus has suggested that the plume might be the external manifestation of a chemically rich, subsurface hydrothermal system that reaches temperatures of more than 200 degree Celsius. Cassini's next close Enceladus fly-by will be in March 2008 and if there is life there, or even complex prebiotic organic chemistry, these encounters will increase the chances of finding life in the outer Solar System.
