Confidence of paternity, actual paternity and parental effort by purple martins
Article Abstract:
Actual paternity or presumed confidence of paternity in purple martin males is unrelated to their parental care of unrelated offspring sired by other males. The level of provisioning these nestlings by young males is similar to that of the older males, despite being cuckolded at a higher rate. Within the young age group, parental effort is unaffected by variance in paternity. However, males make little efforts in feeding or nest building irrespective of their paternity status. Caring for the unrelated young also increases male social status and fitness, thus encouraging this behavior.

Problems with pair-wise comparisons: does certainty of paternity covary with paternal care?
Article Abstract:
The use of the comparative technique in analyzing parental behavior in birds failed to disprove the correlation between parental care and extra-pair paternity. The discrepancy in the results can be attributed to erroneous computation of data and the use of incorrect extra-pair paternity estimates that were derived from DNA fingerprinting data. It can also be attributed to the low sample sizes of the populations compared since pair-wise comparisons are ideal for large sample size populations only.
