Conservation priorities for chukar partridge in Israel based on genetic diversity across an ecological gradient
Article Abstract:
Conservation priorities for chukar partridge (Alectrois chukar) are based on genetic diversity across an ecological gradient in Israel. Allozyme diversity of birds collected at five locations in their continuous range in each of two years. The genetic diversity increased significantly along a gradient from populations in Mediterranean regions to those at the ecotone in the northern Negev desert, although the populations were close to each other. Priorities for other populations can be set up based on their genetic diversity across ecological gradients. Unbanization in Israel threatens to disrupt unique and perhaps essential genetic connections of chukar populations. Management of the chukars in a metapopulation context is urgently needed.

Mitochondrial DNA variability in Italian and east European wolves: detecting the consequences of small population size and hybridization
Article Abstract:
Five hundred and forty six base pairs of the mitochondria DNA (mtDNA) control region in a comprehensive set of Italian wolf population are sequenced and compared to dogs and other wolf populations from Europe and the Near East. The data confirms the absence of mtDNA variability in Italian wolves and suggests that all the extant mtDNAs in the Italian wolf population represent a single mitochondrial lineage.

Evaluating dispersal estimates using mtDNA data: Comparing analytical and simulation approaches
Article Abstract:
Simulation models are designed to evaluate the adequacy of using analytical formulae to estimate dispersal rates needed for conservation decisions with mtDNA as a genetic marker. The model incorporates uncertainties into a probability distribution.
