Conservation spotlight: tomato frogs
Article Abstract:
The Baltimore Zoo has led collaborative efforts to increase the genetic diversity of the captive population of the endangered Madagascar Tomato Frog. Individuals from a number of US zoos have been shipped to the University of California where hormonal manipulation resulted in 255 froglets from two spawnings. The frogs produced from the spawnings have been sent to other US zoos where they can be paired with frogs of different bloodlines.

Marine invasions and the preservation of coastal diversity
Article Abstract:
Ballast water may be the largest source of foreign organisms to global coastal ecosystems daily, changing the biodiversity by adding species, changing their relative abundances and by deleting, though little knowledge of extinctions exist. A fall in the number of professional taxonomists to recognize these invasions and differentiate the native species from the exotic ones aggravate the issue.

Rationale for a system of international reserves for the open ocean
Article Abstract:
International marine reserves should be established in the open ocean. The reserves would be areas with no commercial shipping, little or no pressure from fishing, no weapons deployment or testing, and no floating cities. They should represent the different biogeographic regimes of the open oceans, including boreal, temperate and tropical oceans.
