Constraints from partitioning experiments on the composition of subduction-zone fluids
Article Abstract:
Alkali-chloride-rich aqueous fluids derived from seawater may regulate the transport of trace elements in subduction zones to volcanic arc magmas. In the laboratory, the fluid/mineral partitioning coefficients of solutions were determined at 1040-1100 celsius and three to 20 kbar by measuring the portioning of trace elements between silicate melts and fluids. The results indicate that such fluids generate isotope enrichment and trace element patterns characteristics for calc-alkaline magmas.

Direct observation of complete miscibility in the albite-H2O system
Article Abstract:
A Bassett-type externally heated diamond anvil cell is used to directly observe complete miscibility in the albite-H2O system. The infrared spectra of coexisting phases near to the critical point were measured at high pressure and temperature. Results indicate that complete miscibility between silicate melts and hydrous fluids occurs in the deeper areas of the upper mantle and that the melting temperature for such a part of the mantle is indefinable.

Pressure-induced coordination changes of transition-metal ions in silicate melts
Article Abstract:
The crystal field spectra of doped silicate glasses quenched from high pressure and high temperature melts show that high pressures change the coordination of cobalt and nickel ions in silicate melts. The partitioning of these species into melt phase rises with pressure, and at lower mantle conditions the crystal/melt and metal/melt partition coefficients reduce.
