Contextual use of the push-up display by the sagebrush lizard, Sceloporus graciosus
Article Abstract:
The behavioral context of the push-up display of Sceloporus graciosus is analyzed. Both male and female lizards exhibit push-up displays that are categorized into 'assertion' and 'challenge' displays. Challenge displays are of greater intensity and is used to express territoriality. In this kind of push-ups, the blue belly and gular patches are exposed. Lastly, assertion displays are spontaneous, more variable and of lesser intensity in bodily movements. This push-up is for relaying information about the displaying lizard's identity.

Population differences in a lizard communicative display: evidence for rapid change in structure and function
Article Abstract:
Push up displays in three populations of sagebrush lizards, Sceloropus graciosus, were monitored to determine variation in the display behavior in different populations. Differences in display body postures, the number of legs extended to display the up-and-down motion and the number of headbobs differ in the three populations under investigation. Further, each population has at least one unique behavior. The push-up display appears to be undergoing a rapid change in structure and function.

Large-scale patterns of signal evolution: An interspecific study of Liolaemus lizard headbob displays
Article Abstract:
Two morphologically and ecologically similar lizard genera, Sceloporus and Liolaemus, are used to provide replicate examples of the evolution of a complex visual display. New data on the headbob displays of 16 Liolaemus species, which produce headbob displays that are remarkably simple in structure in comparison to those produced by Sceloporus, is presented.
