Contribution of human hippocampal region to novelty detection
Article Abstract:
The hippocampal region in human brain not only induces memory formation but also plays an important role in the distributed limbic-cortical network that detects/responds to novel stimuli. Electrophysiological recordings of scalp and intracranial event-related potentials reveal the role of the stimuli in activating a distributed network characterized by prefrontal and posterior association cortex. A study of hippocampal lesion patients shows reduction in both the responses when subjected to unexpected novel stimuli, whereas the response to expected control stimuli reveals no such behavior.

Sleep on it
Article Abstract:
The role of sleep in neural plasticity and memory consolidation is discussed. Slow-wave sleep improves the ability of a person to perform a task that was learnt before going to sleep thus providing evidence that slow-wave activity has a specific role in plasticity and learning.

Consolidation during sleep of perceptual learning of spoken language
Article Abstract:
Memory consolidation which results from sleep, has been broadly viewed in verbal list learning, spatial learning, skill acquisition and motor tasks. The recovery and subsequent retention of material learned opportunistically at any time is facilitated by sleep.
