Copulation and mate-guarding patterns in polygynous European starlings
Article Abstract:
The copulation and mate-guarding patterns among male and female European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) of various mating status were examined. The timing and frequency of these behaviors during the fertile period in relation to the day of first ovulation and time of day were observed in two nestbox colonies in Antwerp, Belgium. The findings indicate that extra-pair copulation attempts were more frequent and mate guarding was more intense in the late morning during the ovulatory period.

Dominance and mating success in male boat-tailed grackles
Article Abstract:
The mating success of boat-tailed grackles, Quiscalus major, was studied. The findings indicated thatthe differences in male mating success was associated with dominance in rank and with competition for concentration of breeding females. A male's position in the dominance hierarchy affected its access to females with first-ranking males taking over receptive females. Mid-ranking males stayed at the border of the colonies and low-ranking males hardly mingled with colonies.

Dominance status, mating strategies and copulation success in cooperatively polyandrous white-winged trumpeters, Psophia leucoptera (aves: psophiidae)
Article Abstract:
A study of the mating habits of the polyandrous white-winged trumpeters revealed that both dominant and subordinate males competed intensely to copulate with the dominant, breeding female of the species. Dominant males used aggressive methods to rebuff the subordinates from copulating, while the subordinates grouped together to hinder the dominant male's efforts to mate.
