Crystallization of hard-sphere colloids in microgravity
Article Abstract:
The second United States Microgravity Laboratory was carried into space on board Columbia in November 1995 by the Space Shuttle mission STS-73. The 16-day experimental program included observations of the effects of gravity on colloidal crystal growth. The colloidal disorder-order transition experiment found that stable, disk-like, branched crystals were formed by suspending microscopic spheres of poly(methylmethacrylate) in liquid. The crystals, usually found on Earth as a mixture of face-centered cubic packing and random hexagonal close-packing, were purely random hexagonal close-packed.

Large, oil-soaked endowment helps state universities weather current hard times
Article Abstract:
The University of Texas (UT) and Texas A & M University are fairing better than other states' schools during the current recession thanks to an endowment of oil-rich land in West Texas. The 2 million acres of land were donated to the state in 1882 and began producing oil in 1923; the UT receives 2/3 of the resulting revenue and Texas A & M 1/3. However, declining oil prices in the 1980s and vanishing reserves may force the schools to deplete the endowment's capital. Fortunately, increased financial aid from the federal government has helped to minimize the Texas schools' money problems.

Hard knock for thermodynamics
Article Abstract:
New research supplies further evidence that the glass transition is not thermodynamic in origin. The possibility of linking the non-local character of the cluster Monte Carlo method with molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the true dynamics of glasses is discussed.
