DNA methylation models histone acetylation
Article Abstract:
Histone acetylation is one of the main determinants of chromatin structure, although it is not yet known how histone acetylation profiles are established on sequences of tissue-specific and housekeeping genes. A new study shows that DNA methylation is involved in the process by generating decreased levels of chromatin acetylation and investigates whether this under-acetylation leads to transcriptional inhibition. It is shown that DNA methylation in higher organisms may contribute to local histone deacetylation and so maintains epigenetic chromosomal states.
