Defects in cardiac outflow tract formation and pro-B-lymphocyte expansion in mice lacking Sox-4
Article Abstract:
The lack of the Sox-4 gene in mice impairs the development of endocardial ridges and blocks B-cell development at the pro-B cell stage. Endocardial ridges precede the development of cardiac septation in mouse embryos and are necessary for Sox-4 expression. A study of hematopoiesis in mice, lethally irradiated and reconstituted with Sox-4(super -/-) fetal liver cells, indicates that mutation in Sox-4 reduces the responsiveness of B-cell progenitors to IL-7. The expression of the transcription activator Sox-4 occurs only in immature B and T lymphocytes in adult mice, though it is expressed at many sites during murine embryogenesis.

An HMG-box-containing T-cell factor required for thymocyte differentiation
Article Abstract:
A study of mice containing mutations in T-cell factor-1 (Tcf-1), a thymocyte differentiation regulating gene, indicates the absence of transition of the thymocytes from the CD8+ stage to the CD4+/CD8+ stage, which is a crucial step in cell differentiation, in the mutant mice. This implies the importance of Tcf-1, which encodes HMG-box proteins, for cell differentiation. The mutants exhibit low levels of immunocompetent T cells in the peripheral lymphoid organs.

The Xenopus Wnt effector XTcf-3 interacts with Groucho-related transcriptional repressors
Article Abstract:
Studies of Drosophila, Xenopus and Caenorhabditis elegans suggest that Tcf factors could also be transcriptional repressors. The Xenopus Groucho homologue XGrg-4 was found to inhibit activation of transcription of synthetic Tcf reporter genes, while the naturally truncated Groucho-family member XGrg-5 enhanced transcriptional activation.
