Do mussels take wooden steps to deep-sea vents?
Article Abstract:
A number of small and little known mussels, found frequently on sunken wood and whale bones in the deep sea, are closely connected with vent and seep taxa. This whole group is different from other Mytilidae. It appears that vents and seeps were recently invaded by modern mytilid taxa, with decomposing wood and bone acting as 'steps' for the introduction of mytilid taxa to vents and seeps. It is predicted that similar chemoautotrophic symbioses exist in other wood- and bone-associated mussels.

Bioluminiscent symbionts of flashlight fishes and deep-sea anglerfishes form unique lineages related to the genus Vibrio
Article Abstract:
Phylogenetic analysis of symbionts found in flashlight fishes and deep-sea anglerfishes indicate that these bacteria are new groups relatd to Vibrio spp. Although these bacteria can be released through an opening in their host's body, it is not knoown whether they survive in the open oceans. Members of this new group of bacteria are host specific, have divergent symbionts, and a possible parallel divergence of hosts and symbionts.

Fine-scale phylogenetic architecture of a complex bacterial community
Article Abstract:
An attempt is made to determine how many bacterial types co-exist and whether such types are naturally organized into phylogenetically discrete units of potential ecological significance. The results indicate that compensation for artefacts generated by common library construction techniques reveals fine-scale patterns of community composition.
