Donana clean-up 'left half the soil still contaminated.'
Article Abstract:
A report from the Higher Council of Scientific Research indicates that an intensive clean-up operation has failed to eliminate all the contamination that resulted from a toxic spill from pyrite mines operated by Boliden into the Guadiamar River and a small area of the Donana National Park, Spain, in Apr 1998. It has been established that half the soil in the affected area still contains acidity or heavy metals at concentrations that should be regarded as contaminated. The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture had stated in Feb 1999 that 84% of the agricultural land affected by the toxic spill was suitable for cultivation.

Archaeopteris is the earliest known modern tree
Article Abstract:
The extinct plant Archaeopteris, believed to have been an excurrent tree, may produce adventitious organs, according to analysis of a 4-mt-long trunk from the Famennian marine beds of south-eastern Morocco. The adventitious organs have been interpreted as being branches of restricted lifespan that boost the survival potential of the tree. The type B branches of Archaeopteris can be seen as a new category of organ and as representing a significant breakthrough from pseudomonopodial types of branching.
