Gene therapy researcher under fire over controversial cancer trials
Article Abstract:
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has reacted to Steven Rosenberg's questionable research into gene therapy for cancer by denying him a $3.9 million three-year contract. NIH acted after the board of scientific counsellors of its Division of Cancer Treatment denounced Rosenberg for failing to acknowledge poor results from several tests of gene therapy. Rosenberg's work involved using genes from tumor necrosis factor to make tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes attack cancer cells. NIH will stop Rosenberg's research unless he explains his conduct more satisfactorily.

Brown starts debate with his report asking science to improve economy
Article Abstract:
House science committee chairman George Brown suggested in a Sep 1992 report that federal aid to research be shifted toward projects likely to better the US economy. Brown's report urges researchers receiving federal funds to do more to enhance competitiveness and other economic problems. Some scientists reacted angrily to the report which they said betrayed a poor understanding of science and proposed funding ideas that have already failed in Europe. Brown has at least succeeded in his goal of provoking a national debate on science policy.
