Education reforms struggle against apartheid's legacy
Article Abstract:
Sibusiso Bengu, the minister of education in South Africa, is facing many hurdles in reforming the educational system in the post apartheid era. More than 30% of the country's population are students and his ministry is the biggest spender of the government. The number of African pupils taking mathematics and physics in matriculation is far less than that of Whites. The pass rates of the African students are also less than of that the Whites. The biology course does not include molecular biology and evolution, and include only routine topics. Qualified teachers are also in short supply.

A Cold War legacy
Article Abstract:
Former East German military bases that once protected wildlife by keeping people out are now closed, and the fate of the wildlife populations is unknown. Because access to areas such as Doberitz and Lieberose was once restricted due to military training and arms testing, native wildlife populations flourished. The end of the Cold War has opened the land to public use, and if it is developed the wildlife it houses will suffer. It is possible the land will be sold to alleviate the economic hardships that are occurring as the area becomes part of the free market.
