The effect of feed intake and body weight on purine derivative excretion and microbial protein supply in sheep
Article Abstract:
Urinary purine analysis showed that the microbial protein supply to sheep was found to be determined by the amount of feed consumed and the physical bulk of the feed relative to the ruminal fill. The efficiency of this supply correlated well with the ratio of dry matter intake to body weight, which in turn was an indicator of digesta passage rate. The use of urinary purine derivatives to estimate microbial protein supply is a simple and noninvasive technique which could replace conventional cannulation techniques for studies of this type.

Kinetics of hydration and effect of liquid uptake on specific gravity of small hay and silage particles
Article Abstract:
A study was done on the effect of liquid uptake on specific gravity of small hay and silage particles using a pycnometric technique. Results show that accurate predictions of specific gravity of completely hydrated forage particles can be achieved by considering the effect of gas volume and modifying effect of liquid. It was shown that ruminal retention is influenced by water-holding capacity of forage particles.
