A productivity index for marbled murrelets in Alaska based on surveys at sea
Article Abstract:
Successful monitoring of the nesting attempts of marbled murrelets is rare because of their inland nesting habits and wide dispersion. However, knowledge of the seabird's productivity is essential because it is an endangered species in some states. Some 85% of the world population of murrelets is to be found in Alaska. An investigation of a productivity index for marbled murrelets in Alaska uses at-seas surveys to determine the temporal pattern of their abundance in Prince William Sound and suggests that reproductive success is high compared to more southerly regions.

Influence of forest structure and diseases on nest-site selection by red-breasted nuthatches
Article Abstract:
The availability, use and preference for nesting habitat of the red-breasted nuthatch in southeastern British Columbia were described and examined. The birds were found to nest at higher densities on cutblocks with more dead trees and higher levels of root disease. They also showed a preference for nesting in Armillaria-infected trees. Cavity nesting was influenced by both forest structure and the disease agents that contribute to it.
