Effects of body size and harem size on male reproductive behavior in the southern elephant seal
Article Abstract:
The male reproductive success in the southern elephant seal, Mirounga leonina, increases with body size. The males staying in the centre of the harems exhibit high mating success in large harems. The larger body size of central males increases their staying capacity in the harem as it provides them with optimum strength to fight other males. A large size enables the males to remain active on the beach throughout the breeding period by using their stored energy. The central and peripheral males exhibit the highest copulation frequencies with the mating success rising with harem size.

The role of chemical alarm signals in facilitating learned recognition of novel chemical cues in a coral reef fish
Article Abstract:
A study investigated whether the coral-reef-dwelling goby Asterropteryx semipunctatus could learn to recognize and associate a novel chemical cue with danger. Results suggest that Asterropteryx semipunctatus can learn to recognize a novel chemical cue and associate it with danger after a single simultaneous exposure to a novel cue and a conspecific alarm signal.

Effect of changing harem on timing of sex change in female cleaner fish Labroides dimidiatus
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the 2.5-year field investigation of the harematic mating system of the cleaner wrasse. The visiting and changing of harems by female fish who later change into males is discussed.
