Effects of interindividual variation in echolocation calls on identification of big brown and silver-haired bats
Article Abstract:
The identification of different bat species is commonly carried out using the calls of bats. However, accurate identification depends on a significant difference in calls between bat species. A new study of silver-haired and big brown bats investigates the effect of interindividual variation in echolocation calls on the accuracy of species identification. The results show that some calls are not easily distinguished and suggests that geographic differences in calls make it necessary to collect and analyze local reference calls to aid identification.

Long-term range fidelity in Rocky Mountain elk
Article Abstract:
Studies of elk movements show that they are faithful to annual and seasonal home ranges, but no studies have quantitatively assessed range use by herds in the longterm. A new study investigates the long-term range fidelity of two Rocky Mountain elk populations in southcentral Montana between 1979-82 and 1988-91. The study shows significant changes in range use and boundaries between the two time periods and suggests that such events can occur after changes in population size or habitat.
