Effects of summer hunting on ranging behavior of adult raccoons in central Mississippi
Article Abstract:
A summer raccoon hunting season would have only limited effects on raccoon populations. This research, carried out on the Tallahala Wildlife Management Area in Jasper county, MS, sought to compare raccoon movements between an area where summer hunting takes place and a control area. It was established that movement rates during summer raccoon hunts were not different between hunted and non-hunted areas, indicating little additional energy expenditure for raccoons exposed to summer hunting. There were no differences in home range size between areas during the summer raccoon hunts.

Space use and multi-scale habitat selection of adult raccoons in central Mississippi
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that raccoon spatial behavior in pine and hardwood forests is influenced by the availability of mature and early-successional stands. This finding suggests that prescribed burning can be used as a tool to manage raccoon behavior.

Survival and cause-specific mortality of adult raccoons in central Mississippi
Article Abstract:
Raccoons are important for a number of reasons, including fur and recreational hunting, but there has been little work on causes of raccoon mortality. Such work is needed if their populations are to be managed. A study of 176 adult raccoons in Mississippi showed that legal harvesting was the largest cause of death, accounting for 22 deaths or 32%, while natural causes accounted for 11 deaths or 16%, and human-related factors accounted for 5 deaths or 7% of the total of 69 deaths. Summer hunting does not appear likely to have a major impact on raccoon populations, though further research is needed.
