Embalming was used in Old Kingdom
Article Abstract:
The presence of large quantities of pine wood compounds and sodium in the bones of the mummy of Idu II, secretary general of the pine wood trade office around 2150 BC, supports the view that the body was defleshed or skeletonized at least partially before embalming. This finding extends the use of embalming to 1,000 years earlier than previously believed. Many of the compounds were very antiseptic, as no microbial contamination was found.
