Animal rights activists are celebrating a Supreme Court of Pennsylvania decision which reversed a ruling by a lower court that the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals did not have the legal status to bring about a lawsuit to stop the Labor Day pigeon shoot in Hegins, PA.

Hegins: could the end be near?
Article Abstract:
Hegins, PA, is bent on rekindling its love for animals. Although the area has been the site of the world's largest bird shoot since 1934, a decline in the number of spectators and shooters and an editorial for animal rights at The Citizen-Standard showed that the sport is losing support.

Pigeons in the crossfire: a decade of debate
Article Abstract:
Animal rights activists have continued efforts to end the annual pigeon shoot celebrated during Labor Day in Hegins, PA. During the event, ten pigeons are placed inside a box, afterwhich participants shoot them after they are allowed to fly.
