Environmental law and regulation: Lucas v. South Carolina Coastal Council
Article Abstract:
The US Supreme Court handed down a decision on Jun 29, 1992 calling for the compensation of a landowner should the owner's real property be rendered valueless by a law, unless the restriction is based on the principles of state property or the proposed use is a nuisance. The case arose after the South Carolina Coastal Council imposed a law prohibiting David Lucas from building two single family homes on two beachfront lots because of the adverse effects the development may have on barrier islands. This decision, however, does not endanger the land use/zoning regulations in the country.

The Marine Stewardship Council: sustainable fisheries through consumer choice
Article Abstract:
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is a non-governmental agency that was established in 1997 through the joint efforts of World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Anglo-Dutch Unilever Corp. WWF was interested in new ways to effectively manage fisheries resources. Unilever, owner of frozen fish brands such as Iglo, Birds Eye and Gorton's, was looking for ways to sustain long-term fish stocks. MSC's mission is to advocate sustainable marine fisheries through environmentally responsible fishing methods. Its chairman is John Gummer, who is the former UK fisheries and environment minister.

Habitat restoration in the North Carolina Sandhills
Article Abstract:
The red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis) population in the North Carolina Sandhills is split into two groups found mainly on public lands. These groups are separated by private lands where there are no active red-cockaded woodpecker clusters. Boosting the population of this bird in the North Carolina Sandhills will require the establishment of habitat links to permit interaction between the two groups, and it will therefore be necessary to work with private landowners. A number of initiatives have been undertaken to help landowners with voluntary habitat improvements.
