Estimating age of sea otters with cementum layers in the first premolar
Article Abstract:
Researchers investigated the accuracy of estimating sea otter age by counting the number of layers of cementum in their teeth. This practice has been employed in a number of pieces of research but the technique has not been validated. The researchers asked three readers to estimate the ages of 20 sea otters and compared the results with the known ages. The researchers found that the readers used different criteria to interpret the layers. The three readers produced estimates of mean ages of 4.4, 5.9 and 7 years, compared to the actual mean age of 5.1 years.

Using cementum annuli to estimate Cantabrian chamois age
Article Abstract:
Estimating a Cantabrian chamois' age by using cementum annuli counts (CA), which involves the first permanent lower incisor, was shown to be useful for assigning this animal to age classes and for providing means to age large numbers of animals when horns are not available. The CA method eliminates bias as a single observer can estimate the age of the animals harvested throughout a large area. However, counting cementum annuli turned out to be more difficult than counting horn growth rings, the most popular method of determining age in chamois.

Aging bison by the incremental cementum growth layers in teeth
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine whether bison can be aged accurately by the number of incremental growth bands present in the roots of their teeth. The annuli of the molar teeth of bison tended to be more irregular and less distinct than those of premolar and incisiform teeth. The results indicated that bison produce regular cementum annuli in the roots of their teeth that correspond accurately with age.
