How BSE crisis forced Europe out of its complacency
Article Abstract:
Europe was forced out of its complacency by a political storm triggered by the announcement by the British health minister that the probable cause for ten new cases of a new variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease was that those affected had eaten beef contaminated with the agent causing bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). Public perception is that a dangerous complacency permeated the government, the scientific and medical community and the media. There is mounting political pressure for reforms in the government scientific advisory committees.
