Europe drafts a convention
Article Abstract:
The national ethics committees' chairmen of the Council of Europe's 26 countries approved a draft of a European Convention on Bioethics. The convention includes provisions for respect of human dignity, protection of individual integrity and the outlawing of all commercial agreements governing the human body and its organs. However, the convention's terms will probably be general and will probably not overrule member countries' laws. In addition, three bioethics bills were sent to the French Council of Ministers for study.

Marine blasts to be regulated following UK protest
Article Abstract:
The British Geological Survey (BGS) will develop guidelines for the safe detonation of marine explosions for research purposes largely due to the objections of the environmental organization Greenpeace. BGS planned the explosion in Cardigan Bay off the coast of Wales to help study the deep basement structure six to eight kilometers under the surface. However, BGS postponed the explosion after the Dyfed Wildlife Trust, in charge of protecting the area's sea mammals, dropped its support under Greenpeace's influence.

Research groups to leave Hunterian Institute
Article Abstract:
The Royal College of Surgeons of England will cease to conduct basic research within the next few months. An internal review of the Hunterian Institute, the college's research arm, prompted administrators to conclude that further research at the college was no longer feasible and that the various research departments would be better off closing down or relocating. The institute, which was founded in 1986, was troubled by a deficiency of space.
