Europe seeks to rally regional research
Article Abstract:
The use of 'structural funds' in enhancing the research capabilities of Europe's poorest regions is under scrutiny. Although some policies clearly favor those that can use their financial resources more productively, others are aimed at raising research consciousness in Europe's less-productive regions. The European Union will spend some $8.8 billion in helping build the research bases of poor regions. However, since the success of these programs are uncertain, there is reluctance to favor poorer countries with special treatment.

Europe sets out plans for solving neutron drought...
Article Abstract:
Scientific research establishments in Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland and Denmark are proposing to design a huge spallation source to supply Europe with neutrons in the next millennium. The European Spallation Source site, which would cost around 1,062 million US dollars to build, would compensate for the lacking neutron sources forecasted to occur by 2007. The plant would operate at 5 MW. The US and Japan are planning to upgrade their neutron source facilities by 2008.
