Threatened species in New York City!
Article Abstract:
New York City is the unlikely habitat for three endangerd wildlife species that can be found near the city's beach. Nine pairs of piping plovers with nests along the beach at Arverne hatched 18 birdlings in 1997. This is beyond the expected productivity for the bird species. Forty-six pairs of least terns also bred at Arverne in 1997. Both are beach-dwelling bird species and are listed under New York state laws as endangered species. Another endangered species, the seabeach amarant, numbered about 3,000 plants in Arverne in 1997.

The growing role of corporations in species protection
Article Abstract:
Companies have engaged in proactive management for threatened and endangered species. Baltimore Gas and Electric collaborated with The Nature Conservancy to protect the habitats of the Puritan tiger and Northeast beach tiger beetles, while Unimin Corp. conducted population studies and relocation of the Aase's onion, 'Allium aaseae.' Amoco Chemical Co. has made efforts to preserve the habitat of the least tern, 'Sterna antillarum.'
