Evidence for a magnetosphere at Ganymede from plasma-wave observations by the Galileo spacecraft
Article Abstract:
The intense plasma waves and radio emissions from Ganymede, Jupiter's largest moon detected by the Galileo spacecraft on Jun. 27, 1996, suggest the presence of a magnetosphere. These waves include the whistler-mode emission, electrostatic electron cyclotron waves and escaping radio emission. Data reveals that Ganymede has a strong magnetic field and is surrounded by an ionosphere-like-plasma having an electron density of about 100 particles per cm.

Absence of a magnetic-field signature in plasma-wave observations at Callisto
Article Abstract:
The Galileo spacecraft discovered the existence of plasma waves surrounding Callisto, a galilean satellite of Jupiter. This finding indicates the absence of an internal magnetic field or magnetosphere in the said moon. Moreover, Callisto may be considered a major source of locally-generated plasma as seen from the satellite's unusually high electron density compared with Jupiter itself.
