Evidence of giant sulphur bacteria in Neoproterozoic phosphorites
Article Abstract:
A study shows how Neoproterozoic Doushantuo Formation microfossils, interpreted as the oldest known metazoan eggs and embryos, could be reinterpreted as giant vacuolate sulphur bacteria. This is because of the similarities between the sizes and morphologies of the sulphur bacteria of the genus Thiomargarita and those of Doushantuo microfossils, including symmetrical cell clusters that result from multiple states of reductive division in three planes.

Novel microbial communities of the Haakon Mosby Mud Volcano and their role as a methane sink
Article Abstract:
The methane-emitting Haakon Mosby Mud Volcano (HMMV) is investigated to provide quantitative estimates of the in situ composition, distribution and activity of methanotrophs in relation to gas emission. The analysis has shown that the upward flow of sulphate- and oxygen-free mud volcano fluids restricts the availability of these electron acceptors for methane oxidation and hence the habitat range of methanotrophs.

Symbiosis insights through metagenomic analysis of a microbial consortium
Article Abstract:
A metagenomic approach is used to describe four co-occurring symbionts from the marine oligochaete Olavius algarvensis, a worm lacking a mouth, gut and nephridia. A model is proposed that describes how the versatile metabolism within the symbiotic consortium provides the host with an optimal energy supply as it shuttles between the upper oxic and lower anoxic coastal sediments that it inhabits.
