Ex-UN AIDS chief is blasted for remarks on vaccine industry
Article Abstract:
There has been a negative reaction to the assertion by former World Health Organization Global Programme on AIDS Director Jonathan Mann that the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) is violating human rights by not moving to large-scale clinical trials of AIDS vaccines. Mann believes that the 10-member committee headed by California Institute of Technology Pres David Baltimore which advises NIH on AIDS vaccine research should have equal representation by vaccinologists and public health experts. Some observers feel that Mann lacks scientific knowledge and is bringing politics unnecessarily into a scientific debate.

US dispute over live AIDS vaccine trials
Article Abstract:
There is growing controversy over the ethical issues associated with AIDS vaccine research in the US. This is being partly fuelled by calls from the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care for human trials of an AIDS vaccine containing live HIV. The US National Institutes of Health believes that is important to be cautious about going ahead with such trials. It points out that further detailed research is required before all concerns about possible safety problems with human trials can be addressed.

HIV vaccine strategy seeks to woo industry
Article Abstract:
The US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) has declared a novel plan for developing HIV vaccines. The plan may strengthen government-industry collaboration. The strategy involves combining fundamental and empirical research, and developing efficient industry-academic collaboration. The third stage includes utilizing opportunities to promote vaccine research and, finally, developing links between NIAID and public and private organizations in and outside the US.
