Extracellular sodium regulates airway ciliary motility by inhibiting a P2X receptor
Article Abstract:
Extracellular sodium ions in airway ciliated cells, are found to specifically and competitively inhibit an ATPo-gated channel permeable to calcium ions. This attenuates ATPo-induced ciliary motility. This points to a physiological role for Nao+ in ciliary function, and suggests that mucociliary clearance could be improved in respiratory disorders.
