Forty years of molecular information
Article Abstract:
The international meeting in Paris, France, from Apr 21 to Apr 23, 1993, served to focus attention on the 40 years of research in molecular genetics. Although the 20th century has been plagued by wars and political upheavals, key scientific advancements were also achieved during this era. Physics was the area of interest early in the century but this was later offset by the rise of biology as the leading field of interest following an important breakthrough in DNA and RNA research. The events and discoveries leading to the establishment of molecular biology are presented.

Molecular neurology comes of age
Article Abstract:
The growing role of molecular biology in neuroscience was made clear at Nature's conference on the brain in well-being and disease, Nov 12-13, 1992. Participants learned how the techniques of molecular biology and genetics may lead to new treatments for a variety of pathologies. New insights on how sight, smell and hearing rely on differing molecular pathways to produce sense impressions were also explained. New molecular techniques may soon allow physicians to stimulate the regrowth of damaged parts of the central nervous system.

Patterns of pattern formation
Article Abstract:
The conference sponsored by Nature magazine on biochemistry entited 'Patterns of Life' discusses, among others, the mutational approach to developmental biology. One interesting theory was explored: that the elemental processes involved in the development of the bodies of all metazoans are the same. Confirmation of the validity of such a theory would lead to more exciting research on more general and related issues.
