France eyes role in US mission to retrieve rocks from Mars
Article Abstract:
France is looking into participating in the proposed US spacecraft mission to collect samples of Martian rock. NASA is planning to launch spacecraft to Mars every 26 months over the next 10 years of so, with landers, equipped with rover vehicles, being sent in 2001 and 2003. The French Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) also wants Germany to join the collaboration if an agreement is signed with NASA.

Opinion divided on images of Martian 'ocean'
Article Abstract:
Researchers are divided on whether a large ocean existed on Mars two billion years ago. Recent results from the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) provide evidence both for and against the ocean interpretation. The Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) measures topographic relief, and shows that the northern lowlands are flatter than previously believed.

Going underground
Article Abstract:
The Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionospheric Sounding (MARSIS) instrument onboard Europe's orbiting Mars Express spacecraft is scheduled to begin scanning the northern hemisphere of Mars. MARSIS will use ground-penetrating radar to probe below the surface to look for the apparent presence or absence of reservoirs of groundwater.
