French researchers kick up a storm over CNRS 'reforms'
Article Abstract:
Labour unions representing scientific staff at France's Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) have protested about draft plans for a major overhaul of the agency. The government is aiming for the agency to become a funding agency for university-based research, with funds opening up to bidding from competing university research groups. Unions argue that the proposals would turn the CNRS into little more than a research council, moving it closer to being integrated into the university system.

French ministry in climbdown over reform
Article Abstract:
The ministry of national education, research and technology in France has withdrawn plans for a decree to reform the statutes of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). There had been strong opposition from the research community to the plans, with the belief that they would transfer excessive responsibility for the CNRS laboratories to the universities. The reform of the CNRS will now await proposals from the organization itself.

French researchers reject reform plans..
Article Abstract:
Researchers at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in France are against plans to reduce the size of the laboratories and recruitment body. The aim is to reduce bureaucracy in French Science, but scientists believe that it would mean a lack of manpower and expertise to undertake evaluation properly. The majority of researchers would like to see the current balance of elected scientists to be maintained.
